Food for Thought

What if you could see into your future and know you would end up with heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes or high cholestorol and it would kill you? Would you change your diet now?

I’ve been reading and seeing an aweful lot lately about our food systems in the US. There is a lot of attention on animal products and health, not to mention some major undercover investigations at factory farms. There was a movie released in 2011 called Forks Over Knives and in the past there have been movies such as Food, Inc. and books like The China Study, Diet for a New America and many more. These movies and books focus on the health aspects of a plant based diet. I have not seen Food, Inc. and I don’t think I will because from what I understand it’s quite graphic and I get the message about it anyway. I hear it’s a remarkable film and if you aren’t sensitive like me, I suppose I would recommend it. All of these resources seem to provide some pretty strong arguments against consuming animal proteins, sugar and oils. The China Study has been out for years and I’d like to quote it’s motto:  “Change your diet and dramatically reduce the risk of cancer, diabetes, heart disease and obesity”. After viewing Forks Over Knives, I personally believe that I can improve my health and longevity by changing my diet. I have added kale shakes into my diet as a meal replacement and when mixed with fresh fruit, they are tasty (a bit bitter if you don’t add enough fruit) and I feel energized and healthy. When I think about the effect this might have on me personally, it’s simple – I can feel the difference in my energy and it inpires me to take better care of myself. When I look at the big picture I can’t help but wonder how many billions in dollars in medical expenses alone could be saved by people make a change to their diets? It could be astounding.  Not to mention the horrific conditions and treatment of animals, what a relief to the planet it would be! I respect opinions that differ from and understand that we have been consuming animal products for centuries but WHAT IF THEY ARE ON TO SOMETHING HERE? We could save animals, money and ourselves. Wow!

Gene Baur from Farm Sanctuary

We were honored to take park in Farm Sanctuary’s 2011 Walk for Farm Animals on November 6, 2011. Hundreds of animal lovers attended and together we raised almost $30,000 to help rescued and injured farm animals. Farm Sanctuary’s co-founder, Gene Baur spoke (along with many other wonderful presenters) and his love for animals and compassion for all living things is very much in line with our own philosophies. He is an incredible hero for animals and a true gentleman. If you ever get a chance to see him speak we highly recommend it; you will be inspired to make a difference in the lives of all animals and to treat the planet more gently as well. He also wrote a book called Farm Sanctuary.

We hope to work with Farm Sanctuary in the future to provide funds and support for their sanctuaries. We highly recommend you visit them to meet the animals up close and get aquainted with their incredible staff in Orland, CA or Watkins Glen, NY. Penguins in Hand Knitted Sweaters

Photo from and subject matter from www.cuteoverload.com

Due to a recent oil spill in New Zeland, many penquins are a bit more fashionable! Volunteers made darling knitted sweaters to keep the penguins from preening and ingesting dangerous toxins from the oil. It’s too cute and very creative as well!

Toys Made in the USA

It was very important to us that we had Fur & Feathers game made in the USA. We believe that we CAN make a difference by sticking to the importance of supporting workers in our country. Many people have tried to tell us how much “money” we could save by having the game imported but it simply doesn’t matter. What matters is that we work together to make a difference. Does it matter to you if a product is Made in the USA or not? We’d love to hear from you. Please “Like us on Facebook“!
